What causes Alzheimer?

Nobody really knows. It seems to run in families, but so do heart attacks and strokes, and this doesn't help us figure out the cause. Alzheimer's is accompanied by the accumulation of gunk called plaques in the brain, but they're not sure if this is a cause or a side-effect. Lots of smart people are working on it though. There's reason to hope.
