When a teenager is seeing a therapist...?!

Question:

When a teenager is seeing a therapist...?

... for depression, is it manditory to have an adult present? My last therapist made me have my Mother present during our therapy sessions, which put me in an extremely awkward position and made me very pissed. So I quit going. Now I'm considering trying a different therapist and I'm wondering if I'll have to deal with this problem again. What do I do If another douche bag brings this up again? Can I refuse?

Answers:

I don't care how old you are, your parents aren't supposed to be in the room while you're in session with your therapist. I've been in therapy since I was nine, two of my daughter's have gone through therapy and when I was in therapy back in the 60's and when my children were and are in therapy no one was asked into the therapy session with out my or my children's permission. When I'm in the session with my daughter is because she's consented to my being there and what is said in therapy is not told to me unless she's told her therapist that she's suicidal and then it's state law that I be told so that she can be committed to the hospital for her sake.At no time were my parents in my sessions and I don't and didn't enter my daughter's sessions with out their permission.
It's a breach of confidentiality to allow your mother to enter the sessions with out your permission. I would report that therapist with the agency or hospital that they are with. They would have gotten in trouble in NYC.
