Anyone successfully treating Bipolar disorder?!

Question:

Anyone successfully treating Bipolar disorder?

My husband has just been diagnosed with bipolar. We have 3 kids, and one due in september. I am exhausted looking after him adn the kids and working and being pregnant. He was fine up until 8 weeks ago before his symptoms started. Trying really hard to be supportive, but am soooo tired, it is difficult not to be resentful. Medication changed to valpro 2 days ago. Will this work? Will our lives ever be the same? I love him so much and really miss him. I feel like this current person is an imposter, and I want my hubby back! Any experiences similar? Any advise?

Answers:

i have bipolar too. and im on lamictal. i was soo horrible before i started taking it and it helped alot. im soo much happier on it, i dont have any bad side effects either. i dont know about valpro but it usually takes up to a month to see the full effect. if he was just diagnosed then you know he's not an imposter, hes the same man you've always been married too, just going through a change, that seems kindof sudden. you shouldn't miss him, hes still there, hes still him. if the medicine hes on is the right one for him then he should be back to the man you married soon. my advice would just be to keep loving him and dont think of him as a man with bipolar, just as a man you love and want to be with. you dont just suddenly get bipolar, he had bipolar when you married him, and now its just showing. its just as hard for him to deal with himself as it is for you to deal with him. the thing about bipolar is you have to watch his symptoms carefully, if things start getting weird or scary with him call his doctor immediatly. i dont want to scare you, but my dad has bipolar, and when he went off his meds he was scary, he also drank though, but when i was 1 my mom and him got divorced, he beat her up, alot. thats good that your being supportive, its really important that he knows that you still love him and dont think hes a psycho since he's been diagnosed with a mental illness. good luck with everything. if you have any questions please email me
