I think I'm having an identity crisis... HELP!?!

Question:

I think I'm having an identity crisis... HELP!?

I'm 20. My Boyfriend is 36. We go to AA... (Alcoholics Anonymous) I feel like I'm living a forty-year old's life sometimes.. work, meeting, cook dinner, go to bed. I used to be a total party-girl, and I really miss it sometimes. I'm feeling really "out there" today ( I just dyed my hair blue) and I'm seriously considering leaving my boyfriend and moving in with my friend and his roommates, who like to drink... a lot. Am I totally Crazy?? Serious answers only, please.

Answers:

First of all, if you are an alcoholic, don't move in with those guys. You can't white knuckle your recovery (i.e. just resist the temptation). You will relapse if you try.

I think you are right that you shouldn't be living a 40 year old's life but that doesn't mean you need to go back to being a party girl. There are plenty of things to do as a 20-something that don't involve getting drunk. Here are some suggestions

1) You are only 20, you don't have to move in with somebody and get involved in a serious relationship. Just date around and enjoy being 20.

2) Spend some time finding out who you are, and spend some time developing new hobbies (writing, painting, mountain biking, etc).

3) Go to school. That is not just about getting an education so you can make more money, college is about meeting new people, getting exposed to new ideas, and finding out who you are.

It appears to me that you feel trapped in your relationship with an older man who has different priorities and agendas in his life. I would say get out of the relationship if you aren't happy. Also, you are not going to find happiness in the party life, you need to expand your horizons, find happiness in yourself not in a chemical.
