OCD? If its not ocd... then what is wrong with me? This can't be normal!?!

Question:

OCD? If its not ocd... then what is wrong with me? This can't be normal!?

I have always worried about everything. Even if they were little things like packing a lunch, I would worry about getting it done. So to prevent worrying, I organize everything, and make lists of everything. I am some what obsessed with this, and it is driving me crazy. I start to pack my bags and make lists of things i need weeks, and sometimes months before a trip, and I have even been known to make my family members schedules, so that nothing screws up my organized adgenda, of events and things to do, and when to do them. If I do not do these things, I get very upset, touchy, overwhelmed, confused, and kinda freak out, and sometimes cry. I take out all of my fustrations on my friends and family. I have missed out on a lot of teenage events, because they were not planned in my adgenda, and I regret this to the fullest, but I just couldn't make myself go, because it may throws things off!

Answers:

OCD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder go hand-in-hand. I have suffered from Hypochondria, which is a health anxiety disorder, and as an extension of that I have let entire days go by while checking online for symptoms, making doctor's appointments and asking for uneccessary diagnositic tests - all costing me time and money, and sending my loved ones over the edge.

So yeah, I think you do have a form of OCD/Anxiety, and good for you for addressing it. I know how embarrassing it can be to come out and share what's going on within yourself, but as much as you feel alone, you'd be amazed to learn how many people are going through the same thing.

I can tell you that there is a great life out there waiting for you! While the anxiety still hits me sometimes, I cope with it in another way now. Talk to your physician - he/she will know where to refer you. If it turns out that you need medication, take it - don't be ashamed. Another treatment to consider is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - it will give you skills to help combat those OCD habits. And support groups are great! Wishing you better days, and *hugs* to you.
