Why is depression and anxiety called mental illness.?!

Question:

Why is depression and anxiety called mental illness.?

Answers:

Because it is a condition of the mind. Other mental conditions like epilepsy or a brain tumor get classified differently because they are better understood, but obviously they are brain disorders too.

Mental illness is a broad category, so someone saying they have a mental illness doesn't tell you much. Just like if someone tells you they have an infectious disease, well heck, it could be AIDS could be a cold, could be Herpes or even pinkeye. Mental illness is a broad category like that.
