Alcohol abuse is VERY common in patients with this disorder. As with any condition relating to brain chemistry (mental illness) a very high percentage of people try "self medicating" with alcohol. While the alcohol can sometimes temporarily dull the pain of the symptoms, there is a rebound effect that makes the symptoms even more severe.
