Paxil vs. Lexapro Weight Gain/Loss?!

Question:

Paxil vs. Lexapro Weight Gain/Loss?

I am on my way to getting off of Paxil and onto Lexapro. I've been on Paxil for 9 years and while it works for my anxiety, it has caused me to gain about 15-20 lbs. I would like to hear from people who got off Paxil (or another SSRI) and onto Lexapro. How did Lex affect your weight?

I NEVER had a weight issue before starting Paxil. I was 5'4 and 120 pounds, could eat whatever I wanted, and was fine.

Answers:

Overall, Lexapro tends to be weight neutral. The truth is, that all of the SSRI's (prozac, zoloft, paxil, celexa, lexapro, etc.) seem to cause a small weight gain over time (generally in the 5-10lb range). In my experience, i find that in general, when the depression is cleared up, appetite will stabilize and return to "normal". Also, when anxiety and depression are resolved, most people will regain their motivation and energy, therefore, burn calories at a greater rate.

good luck to you and, don't ever forget, the best prescription your doctor could give you is to get regular and consistent exercise and learn to eat a healthy diet.
