Addictions question?!

Question:

Addictions question?

I joined a group of gals who weighed between 250 to 300 pounds about 6 or 7 months ago. We have been fairly successful in our weight loss but I am seeing something strange begin to happen. It seems like some of the group are changing from an eating addiction to other types like shopping, sex, gambling ect. It is all they talk about when we get together for our little weekly meetings. We are not a part of any other group having just decided to do it together but just us. Should I suggest that maybe we should invite an addiction counselor to our meetings? Can people who are addicted to one thing and give it up become addicted to something else? I don't have any real experience with this sort of thing but it just seems like there might be a problem. Kind of a gut feeling if you know what I mean. Thanks.

Answers:

What you describe in some of your friends is called: a shift in addictions. Lots of people who are addicted to something wont let go of the addiction even tehy let go of the substance they are addicted to. They replace it. Healing an addiction is a life long process, and a life long growing experience. Having and addiction counselor is a great idea but will meet with lots of resentment. Contact someone in Overeaters Anonymous, they do know what it takes. And sometimes you need to let friends go their own way to find out that not the eating but the addiction is the problem. Good Luck.
