How can I help my son get over his irrational fear of flying insects?!

Question:

How can I help my son get over his irrational fear of flying insects?

My son is 8, and he freaks out whenever he sees large flying bugs, like dragonflies. Even though we have explained to him that dragonflies are harmless to humans, and also we showed him some pictures of really beautiful dragonflies, he still is frightened. He doesn't like playing outside during warm months because he is so scared to see bugs. He has never been stung or bitten, and he even seems to find some "crawlers" interesting. He says it's the "loud buzz" that scares him, but dragonflies don't really make much noise. I live near a pond, so we have tons of them... he won't go outside and play like a normal kid! And I don't want to force him to do it since his fear is so strong. What will it take to get him past this?

I think he has extra good hearing or something, because he didn't cry much as a baby, and when he did, it wasn't screeching. He also complains when large trucks pass by, so it may have something to do with his hearing.
He says that he doesn't like dragonflies because of their size, but he reacts the same to small ones as he does to large ones... Also he seems to seek them out... it could be thirty feet away and he will still cry. He says he knows they can't hurt him but he's "just afraid", and seems determined to continue being afraid...
