What can I do to help my boyfriend?!

Question:

What can I do to help my boyfriend?

My boyfriend has been struggling with depression and its symptoms for the last few months. Needless to say it has affected our relationship to the point where he has even broken up with me because he said that I deserved better and that he didn't want to bring me down with him. He is at the point where he feels he has no hope to ever feel better again, and he has had suicidal thoughts. As I type this he's on his way to the doctor finally, because his family and I have bee stressing how he should go. He's been pushing me away because of the depression and I'm not sure if I should take a step back and give him the space he wants because I'm afraid that if I do things won't work out between us. I love him with all my heart and I want to help him, but I'm not exactly sure what my part in the equation is or should be. Any advice????

Answers:

People with depression do want to be left alone because they feel alot of guilt over the fact that they are sad and they are bringing others down with them. But giving him to much space will make his depression worse. He'll turn more inward and thats not good either. Keep supporting him as best as you can. And hopefully when he sees the doctor he will be prescribed anti-depresents. Once that happens just incourage him to keep taking them. Because alot of people start to feel fine and think they don't need them anymore and quit taking them.
Hang in there.
