Who agrees with giving a child Ritalin? for years I resisted because I dont believe it does them any good ?

Cameron is nearly 14 with Aspergers Syndrome, He has never slept more than a few hours a night, because I was dealing with Breast Cancer & Chemo I decided to try him with Melatonin a herbal based aid for sleep that is prescribed by the GP it worked in as much as giving him a couple of extra hours rest / sleep, then I relented & he started taking Ritalin, Biggest mistake ever, he used to be sitting & crying within half hour of taking them saying he was so sad but didn't know why, then he used to sit like a zombie for a few hours & recover the effects with a vengence, becoming more out of control, in the end I said stuff the Ritalin & melatonin I would rather have my consistant little s*** back than some out of control jeckal & Hyde, the school are now constantly on my case saying he must go back on Ritalin, I think I am well within my rights as his mom to say no to them, if they took time to learn about Aspergers they would know how best to deal with him & any other child like him xx

i am so sorry you have been having problems, my 10 year old has a.d.h.d. and is taking both ritalin and melatonin. I give my son 3 ritalin a day and it is enough to stop any physical outbursts, but he is still very loud. Ritalin does not suit everyone, Iknow a lot of mums who said it did not affect their kids at all but the kids were losing lots of weight. schools are so unwilling to learn about our kids, much easier to pop a pill in them,all i can suggest is that you get as much help as possible, see about extra help in school for your son, it is so hard i know how you feel, good luck.
