Question:

My brother tells me that "His drug addictions got him nowhere but time in jail?"....?

is this a first step of recovery??
or any drug addict says this when they are in jail?
or what is ur opinion?

Answers:

Drug addicts are the most manipulative people on the planet. Do you know how a six year old doesn't know much, but knows everything it takes to get what they want? A drug addict is worse, because they have more experience and knowledge to dedicate to getting the drug they are seeking. The brain of a true addict does little else except figure out how to get another fix. Work, relationships (including family), leisure, even eating and sleeping, all take a backseat to getting another dose of (cocaine, Percocet/Oxycontin/Dilaudid/ Heroin, Xanax/Ativan/Valium, etc./etc./etc.) This is why some argue that it is a disease over which the afflicted have no control.
I have had many patients who have said things similar to "my drug addictions got me nowhere but time in jail" (most recently, a patient told me "I'm allergic to narcotics...I break out in handcuffs"). The problem is that you can never tell when an addict is being sincere. Experience has taught me that the good majority of times, these "admissions" are said only as a means to gain confidence in order to get more of the drug they are seeking. (ex- "So I'm getting clean, but I just need a little more Percocet so that I don't go into withdrawl...at least until my doctor can see me next week). Addiction strips a person of sincerity, honesty, and trustworthiness, and it is important for friends and family to be aware of this.
Perhaps your brother means it when he says his drug addictions got him nowhere but jail time. Or maybe he says this to gain your sympathy, so that you will argue his case and get him out of jail faster. Then he will be closer to his next dose of his drug of choice.
In the end, I have found that the only way to judge an addict is by their actions. The saying "actions speak louder than words" has to be taken to an extreme with such manipulative people. Their words mean nothing. If they wish to prove anything, it must be through actions (or lack of action, such as lack of obtaining a drug), compounded by time. An addict will object to this idea, whereas a recovering addict will recognize it as reality and prove themselves to you over time. Your brother might be angry at the suggestion that he is not sincere when he says/writes what he did, but if he is on his way to recovery, he will recognize the idea that he has forfeited trust, and that he can only prove himself to you and others over time through sobriety.
