Why do people say "you need to take your meds" and "accept it"?

when hearing about schizophrenia when people DO recover? what is it about?

It's difficult to accept a mental illness is part of your life. I have Bipolar Disorder. The medications change my moods. Up until I learned that "happy" did NOT mean what I was feeling when I was hypomanic, I didn't want to continue my meds because I never felt "happy." There is some sense of this with any mental illness and medication.
