Is a control freak aware of what they r doing?
Answers:
In my experience a control freak is aware of being controlling enough to have some excuse for their behavior ready if you point it out to them. They'll usually say they have to control things because no one else will. An occassional one will admit it's his or her choice.
The ones who deny it completely may get angry and threaten to be just the opposite, but I can stand to let everything go better than they can, so that's an empty threat. I tend to point out to people when they are controlling, but then I can afford to do that because they can't hurt me. Most of them do know what they're doing and want to keep being that way, because it makes them feel better. You'd have to get to that underlying feeling to help a controlling person change.
