How can one go about fighting depression without going to a doctor?

In some way is depression and being shy related?

There are self-help books you can get - my little brother got one because he didn't feel comfortable going to the doctor or telling my parents. I know the book he got helped him too, to understand his depression and deal with it, but I don't know what book it was.

It's a natural supplement you can get at any store that specializes in supplements and vitamins. That's where I got mine anyway, but I never checked pharmacies, they might have it too.
