Can I change my diet to help me with my depression?!

Question:

Can I change my diet to help me with my depression?

What foods can I add to my diet that will promote good endorphines to put me in a better mood, also what could or would make it worse?

Answers:

You can certainly change your diet to help depression. Eating unhealthily or taking part in emotional eating (eating when you're sad) can agitate already salient depressive symptoms. Avoid high calorie foods and avoid grease. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. There's no magic food for depression but a healthy diet can help you greatly.

The best thing you can do to help your depression aside from therapy is to take part in daily exercise. Make a commitment to 30-40 minutes of daily rigorous exercise. Exercise helps the brain to release serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that serves as a mood regulator. Serotonin is actually the neurotransmitter targeted by many of the antidepressant medications on the market today. Studies have shown that regular exercise has similar effects as antidepressants. Be sure to consult with your therapist or doctor regarding any diet or exercise regimen you plan to engage in. Best of luck.
