Initial session with the clinical psychologist?!

Question:

Initial session with the clinical psychologist?

so I went to see a clinical psychologist for the first time, I'm trying to figure out whether or not he was good. I've never seen a therapist before so it's hard for me to tell the quality of the session and the therapist. I found out that my therapist currently works at my undergrad college as a counselor and when I went for my initial visit he took most of the time to ask me questions about my life, and how I felt about certain things. He scheduled for another session with me but before I decide on that, how can you judge whether or not this psychologist is good? What are signs to look for if he's a bad therapist? As a young adult is it good to see a therapist that also works at a college as a counselor? Did it sound like he was decent? Let me know your thoughts....thanks

Answers:

It sounds like he did a good job for an initial visit. Before you're able to really judge your psychologist, I think you need to see him a couple of times to make sure you feel comfortable. If you know the first time there was something that made you feel uncomfortable, I'd say axe it right there. But it sounds like it was just a learning experience of finding what to expect. And being that he works as a college counselor, he'll probably be able to tend to your needs. Really, it's all about how YOU feel. If there's something that doesn't work for you there, try another. There will be someone that you will click with. It tooke me a couple of different therapists before finding the one I stayed with for almost 4 years.
Good luck and I hope it works out for you!
