Looking for a psychiatrist?!

Question:

Looking for a psychiatrist?

i am looking for a psychiatrist and i have 2 choices, one has a MD and other has a PHD, which one is the better choice? and what is the difference from MD and PHD?

Answers:

A with a PhD is not a psychiatrist - that person would be a psychologist.

The difference between a PhD (psychologist) and MD (psychiatrist) is that a psychiatrist can prescribe medications while, in most states, a psychologist cannot. The only states where some psychologists are able to prescribe medications are Louisiana and New Mexico.

Both psychologists and psychiatrists can provide therapy, though psychologists do so more frequently than psychiatrists.

The type of practitioner you choose to see depends largely on what type of problem you're dealing with and what type of treatment you're looking for. If you want to be on medication, a psychiatrist is the better option. If you're mainly interested in talk therapy, I would see a psychologist. However, most conditions are treated most effectively with a combination of therapy and medication, so a lot of people see both a psychologist and a psychiatrist.
