What exactly is a bipolar, depressive episode?!

Question:

What exactly is a bipolar, depressive episode?

how often do people with this disorder have these major episodes?? is it normal to push people away? I'm at the receiving end and I'm having a hard time not taking it personally...

Answers:

Beyond the information in answers to your previous questions like this, I would add that there is no norm to how many episodes someone with bipolar disorder can have. Some people have a lot of symptoms with bipolar disorder. Some have mild or infrequent symptoms to begin with or do well with medications. I've had bipolar disorder for over 35 years, and for less than 10% of that time was it any influence on my romantic relationships. But I did well with lithium. Without a good response to medication it might have been much worse.

To the crux of your question, yes, there are many reasons why someone with bipolar depression would push everyone away, something that has nothing to do with you. When I was depressed I didn't want to be around happy people to remind me I'm depressed. Shame might have something to do with it. Just needing to attend to one's problems, including contemplating suicide, might have something to do with it.

Many people say harsh things about relationships with bipolars. Others have been more successful. If you use the search feature on this website for "bipolar relationship", you'll find many answers of both kinds. I hope you know that your life depends much more on who you are than anyone else.
