What is wrong with her??!

Question:

What is wrong with her??

I am very concerned for my friend shes 22 and she has a intense fear of people and going out.... If she has a appointment a month away she will be bracing herself for it all month and barley sleep until its over.

When somebody rings her door bell she stands there in fear and sometimes hides rather then open the door or see who it is.

She goes out once a week if that!.. to collect food and pay bills and thats very hard for her to deal with going out.

She leaves curtains closed everyday.

And she wont answer her phone unless she knows who it is..

What is wrong with her?? i want to help her.

Answers:

She is suffering and needs psychiatric help. What you describe sounds like agoraphobia.

You are on the right track by standing by her and trying to be supportive. If you can assist her in getting to the doctor for more help, that would be good.

Many mental illnesses emerge at this age, and in time, her condition may get better, especially if she gets help.

Now, one piece of advice. I am married to someone who, it turns out, has a serious mental illness. Do what you can, but don't let this take over your life. It is your responsibility not to be dragged down by this, because you cannot help her otherwise.
