What cuases bipolar and can it run in families?

My mom suffers from stress and my dad from depression. I have 3 siblings suffering from depression and I am bipolar. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Mental illness seems to run in my family but I'm the only one with bipolar disorder. I read that children with mentally ill parents are far more likely to be mentally ill and to start having symptoms earlier than their parents did. This is true for my family.
