I think I have an anxiety problem. Any advice?

I freak out over really strange things. The other day I started crying because I thought my boyfriend (who I've never had any problems with) was trying to stab me with a needle when he was really just trying to tickle me. Today I convinced myself there was a dead body somewhere in my neighborhood because there was a strange smell (it turns out it was garbage day). I'm afraid of worms (I'm really not kidding) and I had to convince myself for 10 minutes today that my dishwashing sponge was not infested with worms. I'm constantly wondering what people think of me and trying to fit myself into a place where they'll like me but it makes me a nervous wreck. I'm very jumpy.
I've been treated for depression with Lexapro, but I don't like taking it because the side effects are awful, and I feel like I have fairly good control over my depression now. I'd like to avoid medication. Anyone have any theories about why I'm acting this way, or any suggestions as to how I can relax?

What you seem to be describing is paranoia. This can be serious. The cause of paranoia can differ between individuals thus the remedy would be different depending on your situation. I would advise you to speak to a psychiatrist about how you are feeling. Regarding your depression, if you have been prescribed medication, you should take it. If the side effects are really bad, speak to your doctor and I'm sure there are alternatives. Although you may feel as though you have overcome depression, I would leave that determination to your doctor. You cannot trust your own judgment of yourself in such a situation, so let the doctor determine if you have overcome your depression and how to proceed.
