Which type of specialist for do I choose for depression? Social worker, pyscholo!

Question:

Which type of specialist for do I choose for depression? Social worker, pyschologist, pyschiatrist?

First time every going to see a mental health provider and I'm not sure what type of these providers to start with!? I almost feel like a licensed social worker is not qualified enough to help me.. am I wrong?

Answers:

You are most certainly incorrect. Social workers provide the vast majority of counseling services in most mental health settings and unless you are seeking meds and only meds (see a psychiatrist for meds only) a social worker is equally capable of providing psychotherapy as a psychologist. There is virtually no distinction with the exception of psychological testing (the bulk of which is intelligence testing) which is performed only by psychologists. Social workers with the proper credentials may bill insurance as well if this is a concern. Social workers treat all the same conditions as would a psychologist and the most important criterion in distinguishing a therapist's efficacy is generally experience regardless of the degree.
