A question about happiness: Is this normal?!

Question:

A question about happiness: Is this normal?

I have suffered from depression as long as I remember, even when I was a child (as early as 8 or 9). I am taking medicine and feeling a lot better which is great, but occasionally I think I might get too happy. I start feeling almost high, and thinking life is so beautiful and perfect, and sometimes I even get teary eyed thinking about it. It is a very powerful feeling, and I don't know if this means something is out of whack with my medicine, or if this is what happiness is, and I have just never felt it before.

In response to the first answer, the medicine makes me more emotional. I used to just not care about stuff, but now I really get in to movies and things like that. It still creeps me out, though. I feel like a weirdo!

Answers:

It sounds pretty normal (and pretty wonderful, especially if you aren't used to feeling that way, right?).
However, there are a couple of medications that can cause manic-like symptoms as one of the side effects. I'm not convinced that's what's going on in your case. Nevertheless, I just thought I would include some symptoms of this, just FYI:

Your level of excitement is out of proportion with what is happening around you, speech speeds up or you are more talkative than usual, hyperactivity or hypersensitivity, a flight of ideas or racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, inflated self-esteem or gradiosity, excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences (e.g., engaging in unrestrained buying sprees, sexual indiscretions, or foolish business investments), increase in goal-directed activity (either socially, at work or school, or sexually) or psychomotor agitation.
If you have not experienced any of these symptoms, well that is good.... and I'm glad for you that you've finally come to a place in your life where you've found a medication that works for you and you can start really enjoying life.
