Dissociation. Need info for my kids.?!

Question:

Dissociation. Need info for my kids.?

I have been having what I believe is dissociation. I will blank out. My older kids are able to handle it, but my 6yo is scared. I wanted as much info as to what this will look like to him . I hope if I can describe what I might look like during these episodes, then I might be able to ease his fear. So I guess I need some things I might do or say during these times of dissociation that I could tell him so he knows what is happening and know what to look for. I am in the process of finding a good therapist. But, in the mean time, I need to help my kids deal with what they are witnessing. Thank you very much to all who have taken the time to help me!

Answers:

A six year old does not need details or thorough explanation, but rather reassurance that Mom is okay and that you will get over this and that it isn't his fault. Let him know that you are just feeling very stressed and have a lot on your mind and if it seems that you aren't listening or paying attention when he needs you, that he may need to say "Mommy" a few times and put his arms around you/hug you-this will accomplish several things- it will likely jog you out of the trance and ground you in the present and it will help your 6 year old feel as though there is something he can do to help Mommy while also conveying to him that he is not the cause of your stress/distress and reassure him that you still love and care for him.
