You should not be so worried if he is in the hospital. They will keep a constant eye on him so he cannot harm himself.
He is very lucky to have a friend like you that cares. If you would not feel to uncomfortable I would go to the hospital to visit. If he is extremely depressed he may not remember your visit the next day or even the next month. This is normal for depression, but you will feel better knowing that you showed your feelings. Bring a card or a photo of yourself to give to him so he has something joyful to look at.
As I said before, you are a great friend to stick by someone who is suicidal.
