Need help with autistic child?
My 6 year old son has autism and he has these big outbursts while in the grocery stores. He often tries to jump out the buggy and run to his favorite isles.Even after we've visited the isles and gotten what he wants,he still has these fits and rages. It's hard to calm him and the other shoppers are looking at me like,I can't control my child. He is currenty attending school and getting much needed therapy and has truly improved from first being diagnosed 5 years ago. Also, when he is at home,he likes to watch DVDs in his room, but he is constantly jumping around the room and from his dresser to his bed. He does this in more of a happy way, like he's enjoying the movies, but how can I get him to just calmly and quietly watch the movies and go shopping?I feel like I am a failure as a parent, but I spend so much time with him and provide so much love and affection, but I still feel I'm lacking something.I have 2 other kids and 1 on the way, married for 8 years.I need help and advice.

Answers:

Had the same problem with my son with Autism. After years of trying to figure it out we realized it was because of a sensory overload. We all have it but deal with it differently. He didn't like the lights, the people, the music, etc. It was too much going on for him. Small trips with rewards for good behavior and talking to him and telling him where you are going (whether you think he understands or not). Most people today understand about children with Autism. You have to find ways to cope with that. I used to sign to my son so that people would realize that he was disabled and not bad. I could care less now. If they are not going to help then they shouldn't judge.
