Should I resort to medicine?!

Question:

Should I resort to medicine?

I suffer from depression and mood swings, along with anger problems. I am normal, but I act like a nut sometimes... I really don't want to take "crazy pills" everyday. I don't even like taking tylenol.

How does it make you feel? Are you glad you started taking them? If you don't take it, are you an emotional nut until you take it? Do you have to take them for the rest of your life? Will you always be dependent on them, with major withdrawls when you stop?

Sorry for all the questions, but I really do want to help myself and live a normal life. I suffer alot worse around my period. I have heard of Prozac, we always referred to it as "the crazy person drug", so I think I would rather use Zoloft or Paxil... Or should I try to beat it alone myself?

I don't have insurance. Is it expensive?

Thanks for your time! :0)

Answers:

You are thinking about it the wrong way. If you had a heart condition that required medication, wouldn't you take it? Even if it was every day? I don't take anti-depressents, so I can't fully comment on how they make you feel, but if you know you have depression and mood swings, why not do what it takes to feel better. You have control over your life and heath and you can take charge. It sounds like you need to make other changes than just medication though. You need to get out more, even if just 1x a month at the beginning. Being cooped up with kids all the time isn't healthy either. You need to do one step at a time.
1. See a doctor and obtain prescription
Once you are feeling better, you can maybe sign up for a Yoga class or start taking walks to clear your head.
It will start to snowball from there. Your life will improve. Not all people who start anti-depressents continue on them their whole lives. Some people are able to maintain their mental health without medication after given the right tools. If you stay at home w/3 kids you might qualify for Medicaid. You would need to apply for Medicaid and if you qualify, your medication and doctor appts would be either free or very low cost. Contact your local mental health agency for more details. There is help out there if you can take charge and get to it!! Good Luck.
