Panic Attack sufferers: Can you help me please?!

Question:

Panic Attack sufferers: Can you help me please?

I have had PA's for 6 yrs now and i used to be worse when i was out and about so i became a little agoraphobic. Im now going out more and not so worried about doing so.

However now it seems the PA's have focussed themselves in a new direction. I am now terrified of riding in cars. I dont drive so my fear is being in a car as a passenger.

I fear the not being able to escape feeling of riding in a car and when in one become short of breath and feel horrible. I cant stop fidgiting and dread every car journey i take. Im scared of fainting in a car due to hyperventilating...that is my biggest fear

Has anyone else here ever had bad anxiety/pa's riding in cars and if so what do you find helps you out in times like this. If you have a fullproof method to help, please share your wisdom

Thanks

Answers:

Hi Dave! Dare I say, I think I have a fool-proof method! I used Cognitive Behavioural therapy to get rid of my panic attacks (amongst other things I was panicked by driving). It takes a bit of work, but I have found it to be super effective.

You can go to the doctor and get refered to a psychologist. Otherwise, you can take a course for free online at: http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/elear... . It has been funded by NHS Scotland and has had great results thus far. A ‘prettier’ version of this type of programme (for general anxiety) can be bought at www.thewellnessshop.co.uk. If you don’t like computers, the best, best book is Dr Robert Burns, The Feeling Good Handbook. It is brilliant and used by many psychologists. Also see http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resource... for good anxiety work sheets and information.

All I can say is CBT changed my life. You might find yourself thinking “this won’t work”, (like I did), but stick with it! I’m sure with a little time and determination you’ll get over the panic. Good luck Dave!
