Psychology?!

Question:

Psychology?

does it cost money to see a psychologist, and if so, appx how much?

Answers:

It does cost money to see any type of therapist. Licensed professional counselors typically charge less than social workers, social workers charge less than psychologists, and psychologists charge less than psychiatrists. However, most studies indicate that treatment outcome does not differ depending solely on the type of therapist a person sees -- point of the story, then, is to see the least expensive type of therapist *that you feel comfortable with and are able to talk to.* Being about to talk to and feel comfortable sharing this with a therapist is one of the most important things to keep in mind.

The cost of therapy differs dramatically based on where you live. I am a clinical psychologist in a major city on the East Coast and my typical feel is $150. I have not been in practice for long, though, and others who have been in practice for a long time charge anywhere between $150-260. Social workers in the area typically charge between $100-$175, while professional counselors are anywhere between $30-100. However, many therapists work on a sliding-fee basis, which means that they will accept whatever payment a person is able to afford. There are also clinics that work specifically with young adults or those who have limited funds. Also remember that depending on your insurance plan and condition, some or all of your treatment may be covered.

In suburban and rural areas, fees are often greatly reduced.
