How can I help a suicidal friend I can't get to?!

Question:

How can I help a suicidal friend I can't get to?

A friend of mine is in a psychologically abusive marriage and wants to kill herself. She has very little leverage (hope, self-esteem, energy, money, skill) to get out, or seek help.

I try to be supportive with an email "conversation" (I can't get her on the phone) but she seems to disregard my simple, low-effort suggestions for getting help or feeling better.

I've offered to have her come stay with me or another friend for a while, but I think she either is under her husband's thumb, or she just doesn't have the energy. Her husband doesn't physically abuse her (thank God), but this means there's no tangible crime to help her get out and away from him.

She's spiraling down, and I don't know how to either get past her husband to help her, or get her to do something for herself. She also has very little other friend or family support.

Is there any kind of intervention service I can call? Should she be forced to get help against her own will? Any help is appreciated--thanks.

Answers:

if she is telling you she is going to commit suicide it is a cry for help. I have had 5 people in my family kill themselves. She has to want to help herself first. Just keep assuring yourself even though it is hard you have done all that you can to try and help her. My family had intervened and sent a loved one by force to a centre. We had to sign him in. A week later he signed himself out and hung himself. In the note he blamed us for doing it and saying it took him over the edge us doing that. We know we were only trying to help him and dont blame ourselves. Mental illness is serious and it sounds like your friend is suffering from it. My cousin was diagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder in the autopsy. Just remember you are trying your best to help her and being there for her is great. I know it is hard but she needs to learn to help herself and realize she is sick. Try talking to some of her family members and let them know it is going on to try and make her see. I WISH I DID!! Have you called the suicide hotline maybe they will have ideas. She wants to end the pain in her life and doesnt wanna die
