Anybody have any advice on how to choose a counselor?!

Question:

Anybody have any advice on how to choose a counselor?

I looked in the phone book and there are so many I don't know who to pick! Should I just randomly call one or is there something I should look for. I also don't know what all those tilte abreviations mean. Like L.P.C. or L.M.F.T. or LCSW or MSSW. What? Basiclly I was so stressd at work that I walked out, in tears, and was told I could take a paid two week leave of absence if I got a note from a counselor saying I neeed a rest.

Answers:

My therapist is an LMFT and she is great.

Therapists don't go medications, you need a phychiatrist for that - if it is something you may need,

I did try a couple of therapists before I found the right one for me.

Your insurance may narrow down the list for you.

I reccommend an office that has a couple of doctors (even if you don't see one) and a few therapists. That way, if you are in crisis, you can still get help from the same office (they already know you there) even if you therapist is on vacation or ill.

You definatly want them licenced - the FT is for family therapist, the sw's are for social workers.

If you pick one and don't like them, then simply switch until you find the right one.

Your regular doctor might be able to make some reccomendations for you as well.

Good luck and may you find the help you need.
