Concerta (methylphenidate) and no appetite?!

Question:

Concerta (methylphenidate) and no appetite?

Hi all. I just started taking Concerta for adult ADHD and I am having difficulty eating and am losing weight. My doctor told me this would happen but I wanted to know if my decreased appetite will go away with time. Is there anything I can do to boost my appetite? I must also mention that having an alcoholic drink (usually a beer) before meals helps my appetite but I don't want to make a habit out of this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. May God bless each and every one of you.

Answers:

Concerta (methylphenidate) will decrease your appetite. I think that through time your tolerance will build to this medication, and you should be able to eat more. For the first month, at least, you probably wont feel much like eating. I would suggest having a big breakfast before you take your medicine, and try to force down a few salad greens here and there. You wont feel like eating, you'll want to clean a lot. Alcohol wont help. I mean as long as it's not more than a couple of drinks daily, I wouldn't worry about it. I would be concerned if you were drinking to either relieve the anxiety that is sometimes associated with this medication, or to get a good buzz. If you are taking this med as perscribed there is no reason not to have a couple beers with dinner, but on an empty stomach this can be very bad too. Do you mind telling me which milligram you are taking?
