Has anyone lost a loved one, who was prescribed interferon for HepC by the VA, b!

Question:

Has anyone lost a loved one, who was prescribed interferon for HepC by the VA, because of suicide?

My husband, a veteran, had HepC(as do many Vietnam Vets), tested positve for depression, and was prescribed interferon to treat the HepC. The side-effects include suicide, especially when other mind-altering drugs are prescribed. I was not informed of the risks involved, and on 9/08/06, my husband suddenly and without warning, took his life. This was unbelievable to all who knew him. The VA has denied responsibility and I am disabled and lost my business when he died. Now I am trying to prove to the VA that my husband was mistreated and that he should have been under a suicide watch. If any doctors prescribe this drug for their patients, I would like to know what precautions are taken. I feel that my husband was not informed and his other medications for depression and sleep added to the risk of suicide I feel that the VA should pay me compensation, pay for his burial, and notify families of the risks involved. I feel that his VA Dr. mistreated my husband and let us down..

Answers:

My heart goes out to you, I am afraid that I do not know the answer to this particular question but I do know that any combination of medication could exacerbate problems for certain types of people, if this is known that this drug can do this to people then they should have been observing him and monitoring him for signs of trouble. I am so sorry for your pain.
I wish you the best of luck in your fight.
