How do you help a person who has no knowledge of how to help themselves?!

How do you help a person who has no knowledge of how to help themselves?
My wife and I have a best friend who has never ever held a legal tax paying job, still lives with his mother and is being supported rent free by the state for a so called mental condition that he admits he is faking. This makes us very angry as well would it anyone else. We have talked about turning him in to whoever handles this kind of thing, yet we do not know how or if we really want to, we have tried getting him a job and he misses the interviews....now to make matters worse he is abuseing tylonol p.m. so that he can sleep all day and night. We almost feel as if our friend has checked out and the devil has checked in.

You and your wife cannot help this guy.
He is in for a rude awakening when his mother can no longer manage herself or passes away. Just be prepared to turn him down when he tries to lean on his "friends" when this time comes. Don't even let him stay overnight or he'll be yours forever.
Maybe if you and your wife spent more time on yourselves instead of trying to save him he would see the benefit of caring for himself and having a life. With his mom and you two, he really has no reason to search for companionship outside the home. He may prefer to be a shut-in, but sooner or later he will need company especially if he is truly well.
