Question:

Anyone know non-traditional/ ways to help someone coping with a schizophrenic episode?

I know that they should seek help immediately, but if they are unwilling to go, and are on meds what can help them? I know smoking helps decease the delusions, anything else? Please help.

Answers:

In truth, there's not much you can do. I used to be friends with a schizophrenic. He somehow deluded himself into believing he was Jesus. When he had episodes, his reactions would vary. Sometimes he would get emotional and cry, feeling hopeless and helpless. Other times, he would become angry and resort to physical violence (I eventually had to cut contact because he punched me in the shoulder, leaving a bruise). Mostly, he just had a very unnerving manner or speaking and carrying himself. I knew him for a long time, so naturally, I wanted to help. If this is the position you're in, you may consider it's not the best position to be in because some schizophrenics are dangerous to themselves and/or others. If your friend is having an episode, you'll have to use your instincts in regards to whether or not you need to seek help. For example, you may want to contact a hospital or your friend's doctor if he/she goes into episodes that include self-mutilation or acts of violence (or even suggestive of violence). You might also want to separate yourself if your friend blacks out and doesn't recognize you, or acts aggressively either physically or verbally. I'm a psychology major, and can tell you that schizophrenia is a complicated illnes to understand. It's sad to see someone you care for suffer, but if they're bringing you down with them, it's best to get them help. Schizophrenics need behavioral therapy, which requires that they have a desire to feel good again and get past their fears/anger/insecurity/unstabi... As far as smoking goes, I don't know what kind of substance you're referring to. I'm going to assume marijuana, because my friend used to smoke. After smoking, he calmed down a noticable amount. But there are other homeopath remedies you can try, like lavendar oil, which aids in relaxation. Other herbs that promote relaxation are rosemary, valerian, chamomile, green/white tea, etc. You might also try having your friend focus their attention on something familiar that they feel a positive connection with - i.e., pictures of loved ones, a pet, art, music, drawing, writing, exercise, etc. Above all, there's only so much you can do. So don't take it personally if these suggestions don't work too well/at all. The severity of the episodes will determine if you need to get help. If they're extreme, you may have to bite the bullet and call the doctor. Good luck!
