Umm manic depression is characterized by depressions that are highly suicidal and a manic phase that is dangerously reckless and both phases last for many months. I kind of doubt that you could survive, with 2 parents with this disease, out of infancy.
Control freaks are somewhat relative. If they are keeping you out of situations that would potentially ruin your life, this is a safe amount of control. If they do not allow you contact with the outside world{;-) and limit you to eating only tofu then they have gone too far and should be put in jail.
A good sense of humor would go a long way towards aiding you with excellent mental health.
