Skipping work for mental reasons?!

Question:

Skipping work for mental reasons?

I woke up this morning and felt horribly down. On top of that my stomach is quite blah. My brain is fixated on the major problem in my life and for the first time in about a week I'm back to not wanting to function. So I called in sick. Is that cool?

I should add that I am in therapy, and things have been getting better over the last three weeks since the major crises occured. I am actually making some big changes in my life that are necessary. I consider today a stumble on that path.

Answers:

Everyone needs a mental health day. The concern is that you feel like you are not wanting to function. Problems can be overwhelming, but you can't let them drag you down. My life is filled with chaos and if not for work to escape to, I don't know what I'd do. I am all for taking an occasional mental health day off, though. Sometimes its necessary to get yourself back on track. But do it right. Do something you want to do or enjoy doing, or nothing at all, but don't get yourself into a depressed state. Its not good for you.
