How safe is Effexor (225mg) taken throughout entire pregnancy? Experiences sough!

Question:

How safe is Effexor (225mg) taken throughout entire pregnancy? Experiences sought on newborn withdrawal sympt?

I am planning my second pregnancy and under perinatal psychiatric advice was advised to come off Effexor (225mg)for the first trimester. I spent 8 wks weaning off Eff. and 2 days after final dose (37.5) I was very depressed. I realise I need Effexor (I have treatment resistant depression). I was taken off Effexor at 10 wks with previous pregnancy (previous psych negligence) and suffered horrific withdrawal on top of morning sickness. I also had an enormous amount of stress at the time. I had antenatal and PND. I ended up in psych ward at 5 mths gestation and was then placed on Zoloft with minimal effect. Husband and I really want another child but am reluctant due to history of depression and PND. I would prefer to continue my usual amt Effexor but am very concerned about the effect this could have on development of a foetus as well as newborn withdrawal symptoms. Other child is well. I realise i need medication for entire pregnancy not just 2nd and 3rd trimester. Experiences apprec

Here is a url you may want to copy and paste in your search box. It definately wouldnt be considered safe while pregnant, but that doesnt mean that your baby WILL have complications, nor does it mean that he/she WILL be healthy. I took Paxil during my entie pregnancy and breastfeeding. My son was actually much healthier than my other sons, (whom I hadnt taken any meds with). I am actually in the same situation a you. We really want one more baby, but I am nervous to get pregnant on Paxil, just as I am nervous to go through labor w/o paxil. My OB says that Zoloft is considered safer than most, but not safe. I wish I could give you the yes/no answer that you are looking for, but I cannot. You must weigh the risks, and decide for yourself, and your family. Good luck, and it will all work out.
