Depression or Natural?!

Question:

Depression or Natural?

recently ive found it hard to concentrate on things i used to like. I used to be the top of the class in the subjects i took and now im loosing interest quick. Now im also finding it very hard to occupy my time and its really upsetting me. I sit in front of the computer recently reading stories of what i used to want to do as a career and just dont find them interesting anymore. I wanted to be a pilot but i dont see it happening and my maths teacher is constantly saying i dont have talent where as my old maths teacher is saying i do. Now on top of that any hobby i once had im not finding it interesting. Its really frustrating me and on top of that theres someone i like who i havent spoken to for a while and i dont want anything to do with it anymore. I dont know what the hell is going on but i feel bored all the time. I dont know if this is natural or not. Please advise :( or if someone who's been here is willing to have a conversation with me. Possibly a counselor?

Answers:

First, remember that depression IS natural--we will all experience some depression (usually mild and transient) at some time in our lives. You're not "defective" or "unnatural" at all--you're just hurting. Clinical depression occurs when the feeling won't go away (or feeling good won't come back--sometimes depression is a LACK of emotion, not just sadness).

Now, as to cause, it could be many things or some combination of things. Depression can be very complex. Do you have some major stressors in your life right now? Have you changed your diet? Do you take drugs or drink regularly? Any of these can trigger a depressive episode (if that is what is going on). Or, there's the possibility of an underlying medical condition.

Two things: get a physical from your doctor to eliminate the possibility of a disease (it's unlikely, but you should be sure). Then, see a counselor. That may be all you need--or you may need some medical intervention. Either way, you should address it sooner rather than later.
