Are you always dreaming during R.E.M sleep?!

Are you always dreaming during R.E.M sleep?
Even more specifically: Are you having nightmares during R.E.M sleep, or dreams. Or can you be going through R.E.M sleep without dreaming?

I woke up last night from deep breathing and a heavy heart rate. I was having a nightmare so tense that I had to sit up and turn on something for a second and look around my room. When you're dreaming something it's many times worse than experiencing it in real life. It had to be R.E.M sleep and it was interrupted because I forced myself awake from my nightmare.
Answers:
REM is the programing faze your mind uses to recharge. You are dreaming, but most of them you do not remember. It is your brains way of being in neutral. If you go without REM sleep you can actually die. Get some sleep and happy dreams
