What are the qualifications for SSI? What about medicaid?!
Question:
What are the qualifications for SSI? What about medicaid?
My friend is bipolar, diagnosed with clinical depression and says he is getting SSI and free medicaid for it. I am also diagnosed with the same thing, but I havent had it for as long or as bad. Can I still qualify for SSI and receive some $, even if its less than 100 a month? please help. thanks.
Answers:
Just go to the social security office and apply.. If you have work credits you can get SSDI, if you have never worked then probably SSI will be your only option.. The medical insurance (whether it is medicare or medicaid) is automatic after you have been receiving benefits for 2 years (SSI benefits = medicaid; SSDI benefits = medicare).
You are better off with SSDI if you can qualify for that instead. With SSI you are limited to $3000 worth of assets. That means you can't have more than $3000 in your bank account, etc. With SSDI there are no limits like that..
Also note, the above response is incorrect. SSI and medicaid are STATE programs not county. (SSDI and medicare are federal programs)
