Question:

Questions regarding OCD?

I have been taking luvox for about eight monthes I was on 25mg then went up to 50mg. She wanted me to go up to 75mg but I dont. The mania is overwhelming. I drive down the street flipping people the finger. I have this stare that scares me. I yell, scream things. I am aware that I am doing them I just cant help myself it seems to relieve the obsessions for a a second. I was thinking of checking into a psychiatric place to see if they can get the right course of meds. Any suggestions, please.

Answers:

Anytime you have a significant change in behavior, you should let your psychiatrist know.

As someone who has has OCD myself, I'm wondering if you are both taking the medication and doing work with a counselor? Also are you reading information on OCD? I know for some people with various kinds of OCD, they find reading difficult because of their symptoms. If you are able to read there are a lot of very good resources on ocd. I'd start with Dr Bruce Hyman's OCD Workbook, which itself lists other resources.

The other thing you might want to look into, is whether there is an OCD support group in your area. I went to one for a long time in the Fort Lauderdale area, when I lived down there, and it was my saving grace many many times.

If you find that there is not an OCD support group in your area there are many OCD chat rooms on the internet, just do a google search. Some are more active than others, so you might want to look and see if they have posted times.

Lastly, before I ramble too too much, the Obsessive-Compuslive Foundation is a great place to start with research. Just go to their website: www.ocfoundation.org .

Oops, that wasn't the last thing. There is hope in managing your ocd. You must make your doctor aware of your continuing symptoms and take small steps toward helping yourself and letting others help you. I never in a million years thought I would be able to manage my OCD, but I have. Now and then I struggle, but I have tools and resources I use to overcome them, and you can too.

Please email me and let me know how you do.
