Question about manic/bipolar disorder?!

Question:

Question about manic/bipolar disorder?

Someone very close to me thinks he is healed from this mental illness. However, his conduct still has manic traits.

Is it recommendable to make him aware that he hasn't fully healed or should I just give him encouragement by letting him believe he is totally healed?

(He has made GREAT progress in the 20+ years lapsed since his last hypomanic episode and the 4 years lapsed since his last depression without taking ANY medication)

I know this condition can't be healed, just controlled, but he thinks it's curable.

Answers:

It's very important for people with manic depression to realize that they have a disorder and that it can not be cured. Acceptance is a key step in getting better. Once he can accept the fact that this will not go away, he can learn prevention activities.

One good thing to do is find out his "norm." Have him write down his mood, energy level, attitude, and actions when he is NOT manic. Using this, you can predict an episode coming. If you haven't already, developing an early warning system can be good. Recording diferences in behavior can help predict.
