Answers:

You can absolutely ask that your mom not be in the room with the doctor. You're 12 years old; your mom doesn't need to be in the room anymore anyway! Your doctor knows this, and your mom should respect this.

By the way, depression is nothing to be ashamed about. Your cousin has no reason to be upset with you if you think you have depression. You need to take care of yourself. You should be proud that you're taking such an informed step to get the help you need, and your cousin should be proud of you, too.

When you go to the doctor, explain to your mom that you think you're old enough to talk to the doctor on your own; that it's nothing personal, but you'd like to have some privacy. If she reacts poorly, you could ask the doctor to have a moment alone, or you could excuse yourself to the bathroom ans tell one of the nurses the situation. A nurse would easily be able to alert the doctor to the situation, and get your mom out of the room.

Good luck!
