Does my friend need a clinical psychologist for counseling?!

Question:

Does my friend need a clinical psychologist for counseling?

I strongly feel that a very close friend of mine might have depression or some sort of life crisis. He's 26 and has been without a job for 6 months. He's been unmotivated to plan out a career and look for one and hasn't moved forward. He frequently worries about his health and his hair (he feels he's losing it since his father has hair loss but right now he has all his hair) and spent way too much time visiting hair docs and dermatologists even though this problem isn't big. He's been anti-social, doesn't like to go out and party/socialize like he used to. I advised that having a girlfriend would be good for him but he doesn't have the desire/confidence to go out and look for one. I mean he's a decent looking guy, he's just doesn't like to go out, meet new ppl and ask girls out. His friends have all moved on with their lives, he has been at a standstill. I think he has a problem that need psychological treatment. I told him that he needed to see a therapist. Was I right to say that?

Answers:

Lovely ID btw. Yes I thought you were correct in teling him he needed counseling. He obviously needs something to get him motivated. There are a bunch of on-line resources on line that can tell him if he is depressed, if he doesn't already know the answer. Maybe do some research on your own about resources in your community and then show him the results. Perhaps your concern and effort might get him to take the first step.
