Not sure if this is a phobia?!

Question:

Not sure if this is a phobia?

Okay so I'm in summer P.E. and we've been swimming, one of the requirements is diving off of a board. I was really excited but onec I stood on the board ansd started walking out, I started shaking and then for no reason I started crying and not being able to breathe. I came back on the makeup day to try and redo it. The teacher had me dive off the side, that was fine, She had me stand on a 12 in. box and I froze, I couldn't move, she had me dive off of a 6 in. box. I was able to do that twice on the third try I was shaking and couldn't breathe. I said "No I can't do it I can't" and left to change. Since then I haven't been near the diving well. I think it's a phobia that's what the Health book describes a panic attack, but I don't know. Someone please HELP ME!

Answers:

yes, that is a panic attack. you might not be conscious of the fear, but your subconscious is. maybe there was an event in your childhood that started that phobia, and it was triggered again on that day.

a treatment for phobia is systematic desensitization. it means that you gradually expose yourself to the feared object. do not do this so abruptly, do it step by step. you can ask a trusted person to help you with this.

when panic attacks happen, try to divert your attention to something else. deep breathe, focus, do some repetitive movements to lessen the stress. you can have a bracelet or something you can touch repetitively when you have these attacks. it will help you divert your attention.

call for help if you can. it is also best if you have a trusted person with you during those attacks.
