Psychologist and psychiatrist? PLEASE HELP?!

Question:

Psychologist and psychiatrist? PLEASE HELP?

My husband has some severe problems. He has personality changes. Feels tired. Happy one minute to upset another. Anxiety sadness. Just about anything that you can think of we have gone through. He has had a childhood that could write a book( i believe most of what he goes through is because of this) has had relationship fail one after another. Has children with diffrent women ( before we met). He loses attention quickly. and gets mad easily. He is aware that he has a problem and wants help.
What direction should I take? I want to support him and help him and not give up like everyone else has. I am afraid that he will hurt himself or someone around him. please help me

Thanks everyone for such a fast response. I just want him to find the help he needs for our family.
Thanks, and I even thought about going to see a therapist myself to help with our situation. I want to do whatever it takes.
Thanks again

The prudent thing to do would be to rule out medical causes for his behaviour first. Having him assessed by a psychiatrist would be a good first step. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the treatment of mental illness and, as a medical doctor, he can prescribe medication if necessary. As you mentioned that your husband has had a difficult life, it sound as though he would also benefit from ongoing counselling or therapy. For this, you might be better off to get him to a psychologist, as most psychiatrists nowadays are of the "biological" orientation, meaning that they view mental disorders as something to be treated with medication. It might be hard to find a psychiatrist who is willing to do therapy as well as prescribing.
