Question:

hi recently i have started getting depression and my gp has prescribed me with efexor to treat it and to treat the anxiety i suffer with too, the trouble is my girlfriend hates taking drugs and thinks i should too,she tells me that all people who take anti depressants are wack jobs and she doesn't want to be with one,so if i take them to help me feel better she basically is gonna give me a hard time, it's hard for me because i don't want any more problems in my relationship but i also wanna feel better again so i can go back to work...ahhhhhhhhhh lol what should i do, thanks

Answers:

Depression is an illness that can be treated with drugs, just like high blood pressure or diabetes. No one ever suggests to a diabetic that they should give up insulin, do they?

Studies have shown (and I can't cite them off the top of my head - too early in the am) that if a depressive episode is left untreated, it will probably go away on its own, but the chances of a recurrence are much higher than if drug treatment is taken.

If this is your first depression, chances are good that you and your doctor, working together, will come to an agreement about a time when you can begin weaning yourself off the drug.

I will be on antidepressants for the rest of my life, and I can assure you that they are the only things keeping me from being a "wack job." The drugs are what make me more or less normal (whatever that word means).

This is a time during which you need positive, supportive people around you. If she is not willing to understand your illness, or what you need to do to get through it, then perhaps she is more of a liability to your recovery than you need. Harsh words, I know, But it is vital to your health that you not have anyone close to you who brings you down.

Good luck to you, and please email me if you feel the need for support.
